Anthony R. Flores

Anthony R. Flores, MD, PhD, MPH, is Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, School of Medicine. He joined Vanderbilt in July 2024, assuming leadership of a long-standing and highly respected division recognized for its work in vaccine development, antimicrobial stewardship, and global health.

His educational background includes a Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), and Master of Public Health (MPH) from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, following an undergraduate degree from the University of Wyoming. He completed his residency in pediatrics and fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.

Flores' research is centered on understanding how bacterial pathogens—especially Gram-positive organisms like streptococci and staphylococci—cause disease in children. His work spans basic science and translational research, with implications for treating infections such as strep throat, skin and soft tissue infections, and bloodstream infections. He is particularly interested in the mechanisms of pathogenesis and host response.
