Dr. Anthony Lewis is a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology and Interim Associate Head (Academic) at the School of Medicine, Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, University of Portsmouth. He leads the Ion Channel Research Group, focusing on ion channel structure-function relationships in health and disease. His research integrates biophysics, molecular biology, and microbiology to study potassium channels in mammals and fungal pathogens. Lewis holds a PhD in Physiology from the University of Leeds and has conducted postdoctoral research at Cornell University and the University of Chicago.

Research expertise spans ion channel physiology, fungal pathogen biology, and neuronal excitability. Techniques include electrophysiology (patch clamp, two-electrode voltage clamp), molecular biology, and bioinformatics. His work has advanced understanding of pH sensing mechanisms in Candida albicans and potassium channel roles in oligodendrocytes.
Publications highlight contributions to potassium channel gating mechanisms, fungal pathogen biology, and therapeutic targets for motility disorders. Lewis actively supervises PhD students and contributes to teaching the Pharmacology undergraduate program.
Lab affiliations include the Ion Channel Research Group and collaborations with institutions worldwide.
