Anthony Fargo is an Associate Professor at The Media School, Indiana University since 2004 (promoted 2008) and founding director of the Center for International Media Law and Policy Studies (CIMLAPS). He serves as academic adviser for Reporters Without Borders at IU and holds affiliate appointments with the Ostrom Workshop and IU Center for Law, Society, and Culture.
His educational background includes:
- Bachelor's in English and journalism from Morehead State University (Kentucky)
- Master's and Ph.D. in mass communication from University of Florida
Fargo's research centers on media law and policy with pioneering work in journalists' source protection and anonymous communication rights. His scholarship examines how digital globalization challenges traditional free expression frameworks, with recent expansion into cybersecurity threats to journalistic integrity. International collaborations through the International Press Institute in Vienna have produced influential white papers on criminal defamation and anonymous comment systems.
As academic adviser for Reporters Without Borders, Fargo mentors student journalists while leading CIMLAPS' research initiatives. His work has received institutional support through partnerships with Oxford University's Centre for Socio-Legal Studies and advisory roles for the United Nations special rapporteur on freedom of expression.
The Center for International Media Law and Policy Studies (CIMLAPS), which Fargo founded, drives global research on press freedom through interdisciplinary collaborations with international bodies including the International Press Institute and UN mechanisms.
