Dr Peter Coe is an Associate Professor in Law at the Birmingham Law School, University of Birmingham. He holds additional academic positions as a Senior Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Reading's School of Law and an Associate Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and Information Law and Policy Centre, University of London. In 2024, he will assume a Distinguished Research Fellowship at Durham University's Institute of Advanced Study. He is also an academic associate member of East Anglian Chambers (Call Date: 2007).
His research focuses on Media Law, including press freedom, free speech, defamation, privacy, and the societal impact of media. Key emphases include citizen journalism’s influence on regulatory frameworks, corporate reputation protection, and the relationship between media plurality and democratic processes. He has published extensively, including a monograph Media Freedom in the Age of Citizen Journalism (Edward Elgar, 2021) and co-edited volumes such as Landmark Cases in Privacy Law (Hart, 2023) and a forthcoming Principles of Defamation Law (Edward Elgar, 2024).
Peter actively collaborates with institutions like IMPRESS, the UK Press Recognition Panel-approved regulator, where he drafted their Journalism Standards Code in 2021-2022. He serves as the UK’s National Rapporteur on Freedom of Speech and Fake News Regulation for the International Academy of Comparative Law and contributed expert evidence on SLAPPs to the UK Government’s Justice Select Committee. His advisory work extends to the Council of Europe, the Ministry of Justice, and NGOs addressing media-related legal reforms.
As Editor of Communications Law and a member of editorial boards for In Medias Res and the International Journal of Communication and New Technologies Law, he shapes scholarly discourse in media and technology law. His involvement with the Online Harms and Cyber Crime Unit at the University of East London reflects his commitment to addressing modern digital legal challenges. Peter frequently lectures internationally and engages practitioners through media outlets like Inforrm, ensuring academic insights inform public understanding.
