Anthea Black

Anthea Black is an Associate Professor in the Printmedia Program at the California College of the Arts (CCA), where they contribute to art education, creative practice, and queer pedagogy. Their work spans studio art, publishing, curation, and research with a focus on feminist, queer, and trans perspectives.

Research Interests: Anthea’s interdisciplinary practice explores queer and trans art histories, embodied making, artist publishing, and craft as political practice. Their research connects material culture with identity, resistance, and community-building, particularly through the lens of non-normative gender and sexuality. They are deeply engaged in reimagining pedagogy through queer and trans frameworks, especially in art and design education.

Their recent written and curatorial work reflects a sustained inquiry into abstraction in queer and trans art, particularly in the artist’s book form. Projects like The Embodied Press and publications such as The New Politics of the Handmade demonstrate a commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship that bridges craft, activism, and critical theory.

Grants and Research: Anthea is a core member of the SSHRC-funded research cluster Queer Operatives: Writing, Making, and Transmitting Queer Canadian Art Histories (2023–2028). Their creative work has been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Alternative Exposure, and residencies at Vermont Studio Center, The Banff Centre, and KALA Art Institute.

Leadership and Curation: They have co-published The HIV Howler, co-edited The New Politics of the Handmade and HANDBOOK: Supporting Queer and Trans Students in Art and Design Education, and curated exhibitions including Super String, Pleasure Craft, and No Place: Queer Geographies on Screen. Their current touring exhibition The Embodied Press is accompanied by a forthcoming book from Women's Studio Workshop.
