Ansgar Wübker is an Apl. Professor for Health Economics at Ruhr University Bochum since 2015 and Professor for Economics at Harz University since 2020, with additional affiliation as Faculty Member of the Ruhr Graduate School since 2017. Previously, he served as Deputy Division Chief of the Research Division "Health Economics" at RWI – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research from 2014 to 2020 and as Spokesperson for the Leibniz Science Campus Ruhr from 2016 to 2020.
His educational background includes a Habilitation (Dr. rer. pol. habil.) from University Witten/Herdecke in 2015, a Promotion (Dr. rer. pol.) from the University of Münster in 2008, an MSc in Economics from the University of Münster in 2003, and a BSc in Economics from the same institution in 2000, preceded by vocational banking training at Sparkasse Osnabrück from 1995 to 1998.
Wübker's research centers on empirical Health Economics with specific expertise in Hospital Economics, Elderly Care systems, Obesity interventions, and Behavioral Health Economics. His methodological approach emphasizes causal inference through quasi-experimental designs and field experiments, particularly examining how reimbursement structures affect hospital quality, the health impacts of weight loss, and economic challenges in elderly care provision.
Analysis of his 2020-2023 publications reveals consistent focus on German healthcare data with emerging themes in pandemic economics and obesity-related behavioral outcomes. His work demonstrates sophisticated application of econometric techniques to evaluate policy effectiveness, especially regarding hospital pricing mechanisms and treatment efficacy.
He leads multiple research initiatives including "Economic Challenges for the Care of Elderly", "MINVOL" (evaluating case-volume/quality relationships in hospitals), and EU demographic change studies, demonstrating sustained engagement with healthcare policy innovation and systemic challenges in aging societies.
