Manuel Frondel serves as Associate Professor of Energy Economics and Applied Econometrics at Ruhr-Universität Bochum since 2009 and concurrently heads the “Environment and Resources” department at RWI-Leibniz Institute for Economic Research since 2003. He is also a faculty member of the Ruhr Graduate School in Economics (RGS econ) since 2010, contributing to doctoral training in economic sciences.
His educational background includes a Dr. rer. pol from Heidelberg University (2001), a Diploma in Economic Engineering (1996), and a Diploma in Physics (1992), establishing a strong quantitative foundation for his research.
Frondel’s research centers on Environmental and Resource Economics with methodological expertise in Applied Econometrics. His work employs large-scale survey data to analyze energy markets, environmental policies, and household behavior, particularly focusing on renewable energy adoption, energy efficiency dynamics, and socio-ecological dimensions of resource consumption in the German context.
Recent publications (2022-2023) reveal a concentrated research agenda examining solar energy rebound effects, pandemic-induced preference stability, and heating sector dynamics. These studies predominantly utilize panel survey methodologies and advanced econometric techniques to generate policy-relevant evidence for energy transition and environmental management.
As department head at RWI, Frondel leads a dedicated research team investigating economic aspects of environmental policy and resource management, with current projects including the Socio-Ecological Panel (Green-SÖP) and Heat and Living Panel (Wärme- & Wohnen-Panel) tracking household energy behaviors.
