Hvithamar's research centers on the contemporary Russian Orthodox Church's societal and political influence in post-Soviet Russia, examining majority-minority religious dynamics and global Christianity manifestations. She specializes in migrant Orthodox communities, Christian minorities (particularly Jehovah's Witnesses), Orthodox iconography, and religious education in Danish schools. Her work bridges historical analysis with contemporary sociological perspectives on religious transformation.
Recent publications (2021-2025) reveal three dominant research trajectories: empirical studies of Orthodox communities in Denmark, theoretical explorations of global religious counter-movements, and sociological analyses of Danish religious landscapes. These works consistently address Orthodoxy's political entanglements, minority-majority religious negotiations, and globalization's impact on religious identity.
As Head of Department, she directs strategic planning and resource allocation while maintaining active teaching in history of Christianity, sociology of religion, and specialized courses on religion in Russia, religion-media interactions, and religious education. Her leadership extends to managing departmental research initiatives and fostering international academic collaborations.
