معرفی
Peter Birkelund Andersen serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Humanities. With over 30 years of academic service since 1994, his work bridges Danish societal studies and South Asian tribal research, particularly focusing on the Santal and Bodo communities. His institutional roles include heading the Department of History of Religions (2002-2004) and coordinating PhD programs (2004-2006).
Education:
- 1974: Enrolled in Sociology of Religion, University of Copenhagen
- 1982: Graduated in Sociology of Religion
- 1984: Magister (Diploma)
- 1994: PhD in Sociology of Religions, University of Copenhagen
Andersen's research examines religion's role in social transformation through dual methodologies: survey-based analysis in Denmark/Europe and immersive fieldwork in India, including language fluency in Santali and archival research at the British Library. His seminal work investigates Christian missions among Santals, the 1855-1856 Santal Rebellion (culminating in a 2023 monograph), and post-independence religious shifts in Tranquebar. Recent pivots address pandemic-induced existential wellbeing (2020-2022 VELUX Foundation project) and climate-religion intersections.
His 2025 publications reveal converging trends: anti-global religious movements, climate-religion dynamics in Nordic/South Asian contexts, and reconciliation processes in tribal regions. This output demonstrates methodological versatility across anthropology, sociology, and religious studies while maintaining focus on marginalized communities.

Andersen has supervised students at all levels including one PhD candidate, serving on evaluation committees across Denmark, India, and Sweden. His grant leadership includes the VELUX Foundation's Covid-19-religion project (2020-2022) and NOS-HS's Nordic religiosity network (2021-2023), alongside earlier strategic research on welfare (Danish Council) and caste dynamics (Bikuben Foundation). Current projects extend to Bodo reconciliation in Bodoland (2024 workshop keynote).
He anchors his work in the 'Asian Dynamics' research environment while maintaining active roles in the European Association for South Asian Studies, European Values Study Group, and Nordic Centre in India governance, facilitating transnational collaboration on tribal studies and religious modernity.
