Brian Arly Jacobsen serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Humanities. His research examines religion-state dynamics in Nordic societies, with current projects including "Religiøse råd og domstole i en dansk kontekst" and the Independent Research Fund Denmark-supported "Power of the Mosques" initiative on mosque influence in Denmark.
Education:
- PhD in Sociology of Religion (awarded circa 2008)
- Master in Sociology of Religion and Minority Studies (2003)
Jacobsen's research integrates quantitative and qualitative methodologies to analyze civil religion, religious demography, and Muslim communities in Europe. He investigates how religious minorities navigate public spheres, with particular focus on religious freedom, discourse formation, and state-religion policy impacts. His work bridges theoretical sociology with contemporary policy challenges regarding integration and secularism.
Publication trends (2012-2025) reveal sustained analysis of religion in Nordic contexts, with recent works addressing pandemic-religion interactions, anti-cult movements, and Muslim population shifts. His interdisciplinary approach connects sociology, political science, and religious studies through empirical studies of religious councils, mosque networks, and civil religion manifestations.
Securing competitive funding including a major three-year Independent Research Fund Denmark grant, Jacobsen demonstrates significant research leadership. His editorial roles for Religionsvidenskabeligt Tidsskrift (2014-2020) and RELevans (2024-present) reflect academic influence, while his 539 media appearances indicate active public engagement on religion-politics debates.
Based at the University of Copenhagen's Karen Blixens Plads campus, Jacobsen collaborates through the Mary Center and Nordic research networks. His work extends to international consortia like the NOREL project, examining religion-state relations across five Nordic countries with emphasis on official religious occasions and local political dynamics.
