Zoe Knox is an Associate Professor of Modern Russian History at the University of Leicester, affiliated with the School of History, Politics and International Relations. She joined Leicester in 2006 after positions at Rice University (USA) and Monash University (Australia). Her research focuses on Russian religious history, state-religion dynamics, and post-Soviet sociopolitical transformations. She serves as Treasurer of the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies (BASEES) and co-convenes their Study Group on Religion and Spirituality in Russia and Eastern Europe.
Her academic interests span religious pluralism, human rights in Russia, and the interplay between religious movements and secular governance. Notable works include analyses of the Russian Orthodox Church’s post-Soviet revival, Jehovah’s Witnesses’ global history, and legal frameworks regulating religious activity. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2013, recognizing her scholarly contributions to modern Russian and Eastern European studies.
Her publications reflect interdisciplinary engagement, blending historical analysis with political and sociological perspectives. Key themes include Cold War-era religious interpretations, legal challenges to religious minorities, and the evolution of religious policy in Putin’s Russia. She actively participates in academic networks to advance research on Eastern Europe’s religious and political landscapes.
