Prof. Dr. Annette Peters is a Full Professor of Epidemiology at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) and Director of the Institute of Epidemiology at Helmholtz Zentrum München. She also serves as a Visiting Professor at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Her research focuses on environmental health, molecular epidemiology, and cohort studies, with a particular emphasis on air pollution's impact on cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
Educational background includes a Master of Science in Epidemiology from Harvard (1997–1998) and habilitation in Epidemiology from LMU (2003). She leads major initiatives such as the German National Cohort (NAKO), coordinating its biorepository and imaging assessments, and oversees the KORA cohort study tracking aging-related diseases in 18,000 participants.
Her work integrates advanced statistical methods, biomarker analysis, and environmental exposure measurements. Key projects include investigating ultrafine particle effects, climate change health impacts, and herpesvirus contributions to diabetes. Awards include the John Goldsmith Award (2019) and David V. Bates Award (2000).
Prof. Peters chairs NAKO's board and advises the WHO on air pollution. Her lab collaborates globally, linking environmental factors with genetic vulnerabilities to mitigate disease burdens.
