معرفی
Prof. Dr. Barbara Thorand serves as Head of the Research Group 'Diabetes Epidemiology' at Helmholtz Munich's Institute of Epidemiology and holds an Adjunct Professorship in Epidemiology at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich since 2017. Her work focuses on discovering novel risk factors for type 2 diabetes and cardio-metabolic diseases through large-scale cohort studies including KORA and the German National Cohort (NAKO).
Education:
- PhD in Nutritional Sciences (Dr. oec. trop.), Rheinische-Friedrich-Wilhelms-University Bonn (1996)
- Master of Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1997)
Research Focus: Thorand's work bridges epidemiology and nutrition science with emphasis on biomarker discovery, proteomics, and healthy aging. Her KORA cohort leadership has produced seminal findings on anthropometric parameters, inflammation markers, and machine learning applications for predicting diabetes complications. Current projects investigate sarcopenia determinants and cardio-metabolic risk stratification in aging populations.
Publication Trends: Recent work (2021-2025) demonstrates a clear shift toward multi-omics integration, with 7 of 9 highlighted publications featuring proteomic analyses. Her research increasingly employs machine learning for phenotype clustering while maintaining cohort study rigor, particularly through NAKO's 200,000-participant dataset.
Scientific Recognition:
- TROPHICA Award for PhD thesis (1997)
- Junior Scientist Award, German Association of Epidemiology (2002)
- Selection for European Nutrition Leadership Programme (2017)
Collaborative Leadership: Thorand co-leads NAKO's Expert Group Diabetes and contributes to international consortia including DIAGRAM, MAGIC, and SCALLOP. Her EU-funded projects (BiomarCaRE, DIRECT, MORGAM) demonstrate sustained grant acquisition in cardio-metabolic research. She actively mentors graduate students in epidemiology and nutrition sciences.
Research Infrastructure: Her Diabetes Epidemiology group operates within Helmholtz Munich's Institute of Epidemiology, leveraging the KORA cohort's 40-year dataset and NAKO's national biobank. Collaborations with DZD (German Center for Diabetes Research) and DZHK (Cardiovascular Research Center) enable translational applications of her findings.
