Annette Boerlage is a Senior Lecturer at Scotland's Rural College (SRUC), affiliated with the Department of Veterinary And Animal Science and the Centre for Epidemiology and Planetary Health (CEPH). Her research focuses on aquatic epidemiology, leveraging statistical and mathematical models to study environment-host-pathogen interactions in aquaculture systems to improve health management and sustainability.
She holds a PhD in Transmission and Control of Fish-Born Zoonotic Trematodes in Aquaculture from Wageningen University & Research (2013), a Master’s in Aquaculture and Fisheries (2007), and a Bachelor’s in Animal Sciences (2002), all from Wageningen University.
Her work includes projects such as the SAIC-funded 'Gill Health in Scottish Farmed Salmon' (2018–2022) and the EU H2020 'DECIDE' project (2021–2026), focusing on data-driven disease control. She has supervised MSc and PhD students on topics like satellite image analysis, gill health microbiome studies, and environmental impact modeling.
Boerlage actively participates in initiatives such as the Gill Health Initiative and serves on the European Association of Fish Pathologists council. Her research spans aquaculture epidemiology, disease mitigation, and climate change impacts, with contributions to over 38 publications and datasets like the 'Monitoring Scottish Salmon Mortality' project.
