Sandy Carmichael is a Researcher at Scotland's Rural College (SRUC), affiliated with the Department of Veterinary and Animal Science and the Centre for Epidemiology and Planetary Health (CEPH). She holds a PhD in Computing Science from the University of Stirling and SRUC, and a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Software Engineering from the University of Stirling (2019). Her research focuses on applying data science, machine learning, and computer vision to aquatic animal health, particularly in salmon and marine species.
Key projects include the AIA ABA ST tool, an artificial intelligence system for animal biosecurity advice, and the development of frameworks like Ir-Man for marine animal necropsy analysis. Her work spans topics such as hyperplasia diagnosis in salmon gills, mortality monitoring via dynamic linear models, and computational pathology techniques.
Carmichael has presented her research at venues like the A3 Scotland Conference (2024) and collaborates on biosecurity and AI-driven diagnostics. She actively contributes to interdisciplinary teams addressing challenges in aquaculture and veterinary medicine.
