Anneli Soo is an Associate Professor of Penal Law at the University of Tartu’s Faculty of Social Sciences, School of Law. She specializes in criminal law, criminal proceedings, European law, and human rights. Her career includes roles as a Supreme Court counselor, academic administrator, and researcher. She holds a Doctor of Law degree from the University of Tartu (2012), with postdoctoral research at the Humboldt Foundation and Maastricht University.
- Education: Ph.D. in Law (2012), University of Tartu; Visiting scholarships at California State University and University of Göttingen.
- Research Focus: Criminal procedure, EU criminal law implementation, legal reforms, and penal policy. Her work addresses issues like ineffective defense counsel, digitalization of courts, and hate crime legislation.
She leads 'Karistusõiguse Jutla,' a webinar series on criminal law topics. Awards include the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Return Fellowship and recognition for outstanding contributions to the European Journal of Crime, Criminal Law, and Criminal Justice.
