Anne M. Coughlin is the Lewis F. Powell, Jr., Professor of Law at the University of Virginia School of Law, where she has been a faculty member since 1996. She previously taught at Vanderbilt Law School from 1991-95 and served as a visiting professor at UVA during the 1995-96 academic year. Professor Coughlin has established herself as a leading scholar in criminal law, criminal procedure, feminist jurisprudence, and law and humanities.
Her research interests focus on the intersection of gender theory and criminal justice, with significant contributions to understanding women's experiences in the military, sexual assault law, and gender dynamics in legal education. Professor Coughlin's scholarship often bridges legal theory with practical implications for policy and justice reform.
Over the past two decades, Professor Coughlin's publications have demonstrated consistent engagement with contemporary legal issues, evolving from foundational work in feminist legal theory to current analyses of transgender rights, pandemic policing disparities, and political accountability. Her scholarship maintains a strong connection between criminal law principles and broader social justice concerns.

Her educational background includes a J.D. from New York University School of Law, where she served as managing editor of the New York University Law Review. Following law school, she clerked for Judge Jon O. Newman of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell Jr., whose name now graces her professorship at UVA.
