Anne Hellum is a Professor Emerita at the University of Oslo's Faculty of Law, affiliated with the Department of Public and International Law. She has held leadership roles in the Department of Women's Law, Children's Law, Equality and Discrimination Law (KVIBALD) and the research group Rights, Individuals, Culture and Society (RIKS). Her expertise spans women's law, gender equality, anti-discrimination law, and human rights, with a focus on legal pluralism and socio-legal contexts in Africa.
Education: Anne Hellum earned a major degree in law and a minor in anthropology from the University of Oslo, and a Dr.Juris in 1998. She has led transnational projects, including the NORHED program and the EDOLAD joint PhD program in development law. She has also been a visiting professor at the Southern and Eastern African Center for Women’s Law at the University of Zimbabwe (SEARCWL).
Research Interests: Her work explores the intersection of gender, ethnicity, and human rights within national, international, and EU/EEA legal frameworks. Key themes include the human right to water in Zimbabwe, legal pluralism, and transformative potential of anti-discrimination laws. She emphasizes the socio-cultural dimensions of land, water, and reproductive rights in Southern and Eastern Africa.
