Anne F. MacLennan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication & Media Studies at York University. She served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Radio & Audio Media (2017-2021) and holds multiple teaching awards including the Faculty of Graduate Studies Faculty Teaching Award (2023).
MacLennan holds a PhD from Concordia University, an MA from McGill University, and a BA Honours from McGill University. Her research focuses on Canadian radio history, media preservation, and cultural representations of poverty. She co-authored "Seeing, Selling, and Situating Radio in Canada, 1922-1956" and curated exhibits such as "Making Space for Radio" at the Archives of Ontario.
Research examines radio programming history, advertising's role in social welfare narratives, and community radio sustainability. Projects include SSHRC-funded studies on early Canadian radio audiences, community radio practices, and media representations of poverty.
Publications analyze historical transformations in broadcasting, with emphasis on Canadian identity formation, radio preservation challenges, and evolving audio media platforms. Recent work explores podcasting's potential for marginalized history representation.
