Jason Loviglio serves as Associate Professor of Media and Communication Studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), where he has taught since 1999—initially in American Studies and in Media and Communication Studies (MCS) since 2007, including as founding chair. His scholarship centers on media history with specialized expertise in radio and podcasting studies, examining how audio media shapes democratic discourse and intimate public spheres.
Loviglio earned his B.A. from Wesleyan University's College of Letters (1987) and Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Minnesota (1999). His intellectual trajectory bridges historical and contemporary media analysis, with particular attention to the cultural politics of broadcasting and digital audio platforms.
His research explores critical intersections of media theory, sound studies, and political culture. Key themes include intimacy in mass media, post-9/11 media representations, multicultural perspectives on U.S. wars, and the human voice in social contexts. He has developed innovative courses on radio studies, critical media literacy, and media-politics relationships, often collaborating across departments like Language, Literacy, and Culture.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals sustained engagement with podcasting's evolution from radio traditions. Work like The Routledge Companion to Radio and Podcasting Studies (2022) and 2024's The Daily Dose series examines public interest media, gender dynamics in audio production, and community-based broadcasting—highlighting tensions between intimacy and massification in digital audio culture.
Loviglio's scholarly impact is recognized through prestigious awards:
- University of Maryland System Regents’ Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching (2009-2010)
- Two-time Faculty Mentor Award from UMBC Department of Residence Life
- J. Franklin Jameson Fellowship (Library of Congress/AHA)
As an educator, he has mentored students across MCS core curriculum and specialized seminars while co-editing the Radio Journal: International Studies in Broadcast and Audio Media. His community engagement includes board service at Wide Angle Youth Media, where he supports Baltimore youth in media production and civic storytelling—extending his academic focus on participatory media practices beyond campus.
Through Wide Angle Youth Media, Loviglio contributes to democratizing media production for Baltimore youth, facilitating platforms where young people develop technical skills and narrative agency. This community work embodies his scholarly commitment to media as a tool for civic engagement and cultural expression, complementing his academic research on public sphere dynamics in audio media.
