Annamaria Cimini is a Full Professor at the University of L'Aquila's Department of Clinical Medicine, Public Health, Life and Environmental Sciences. Her research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, neuroinflammation, and drug development for conditions like stroke, Huntington’s disease, and diabetes complications. She leads studies on probiotics’ therapeutic potential, antioxidant mechanisms, and environmental toxin effects using zebrafish models.
Her work bridges basic science and translational medicine, employing advanced models such as brain organoids and 3D tissue engineering for drug testing. Key areas include:
- Neuroprotective strategies for ischemic stroke and neurodegenerative disorders
- Cytokine signaling in metabolic diseases like insulin resistance
- Evaluation of natural compounds (e.g., saffron) and nanomedicines for brain disorders
Recent studies explore extracellular vesicles in glial-neuronal communication and glyphosate’s developmental toxicity. She collaborates on aptamer-based therapies for glioblastoma and novel drug delivery systems for pain management.
