Anna Teekell is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Christopher Newport University (CNU), specializing in 20th-21st century British and Irish literature, modernisms, and Irish cultural studies. She teaches courses on Gothic fiction, detective literature, and Irish literature, and actively involves students in research projects such as the Irish Border Bibliography and the critical edition of John McGahern’s The Dark. Her research focuses on Irish literature during the Second World War, Elizabeth Bowen, and Northern Irish poetry.
Teekell holds a Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis, an M.Phil. from Trinity College Dublin, and a B.A. from Rhodes College. She has led study abroad programs in Scotland and Ireland, emphasizing hands-on cultural engagement. Her scholarly contributions include the award-winning book Emergency Writing: Irish Literature, Neutrality, and the Second World War (2018) and co-editing the Irish University Review special issue on Elizabeth Bowen (2021).
Recent projects include a 2024 Tidewater Fellowship collaboration with the Virginia War Museum, producing the storymap Newport News 1919: A City Built by War. She serves as Series Editor for Anthem Press’s Anthem Irish Studies series and co-edits a forthcoming volume on teaching modern Irish poetry.
Awards include two Tidewater Fellowships (2023, 2024), shortlisting for the Father Kurt Fahrt Prize (2019), and recognition for her pedagogical innovation. Her work bridges academic research with community engagement, often involving undergraduates in collaborative research ventures.
