Jonathan W. White is a Professor of American Studies at Christopher Newport University (CNU), affiliated with the Department of Leadership and American Studies and the Honors Program. His academic work focuses on pivotal aspects of American history and culture.

White's research spans Abraham Lincoln, African American history, constitutional and legal history, the American Civil War, and slavery/emancipation. His work often intersects with 19th-century literature and civil liberties, including modern implications of Civil War-era legal debates. He has explored unique angles such as historical dreams and sleep patterns, as seen in Midnight in America.
As a prolific author or editor of 21 books and over 100 scholarly articles, White's publications include topics ranging from Civil War naval history (Our Little Monitor) to postwar Reconstruction letters (My Work Among the Freedmen) and children's literature (My Day with Abe Lincoln).
