Barton Myers is the Class of 1960 Professor of Ethics and History at Washington and Lee University (W&L) and has been a faculty member since 2013. He specializes in American Civil War history, Southern history, and military history, with a focus on ethics, historical memory, and the societal impact of historical events. Myers previously worked as a historian with the National Park Service at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, where he led battlefield tours, and he integrates this experientary expertise into his popular Spring Term course on Civil War battlefields.
- Research Interests: Civil War memory, slavery and abolition, public history, ethics in historical contexts, and controversies over Civil War monuments.
Myers has received academic recognition, including a National Endowment for the Humanities grant (2023) and a Gilder Lehrman Scholarly Fellowship (2021). He is a frequent contributor to media outlets and documentaries, such as the History Channel series Dark Marvels (2023) and Abraham Lincoln (2022), and has authored three books and numerous articles. He also serves on the W&L Institute for Honor Advisory Board, driving initiatives on ethics and honor.
