Dr. Andrew Fialka is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). He holds a PhD from the University of Georgia (2018), an MA from West Virginia University (2013), and a BA from the University of Missouri (2010). His research focuses on the American Civil War & Reconstruction, guerrilla warfare, and the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to historical analysis.
Dr. Fialka teaches courses in American History, Civil War Reconstruction, GIS for Humanists, and Historical Research Methods. His scholarly work combines spatial analysis with military history, notably examining guerrilla violence during the Civil War through projects like Of Methods and Madness, a digital presentation of his dissertation. He has collaborated with illustrator Anderson Carman on a graphic history of Civil War guerrilla violence, scheduled for publication in 2025.
Key publications include analyses of Union perspectives on Kentucky’s Civil War, Kentucky’s irregular warfare through archival records, and spatial studies of Missouri’s Civil War supply lines and guerrilla patterns. His research projects include Fugitive Federals (digital humanities on escaped Union prisoners) and CSI: Dixie (investigating Southern coroner records). He previously served as a National Park Service ranger at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, shaping his interest in public history and creative knowledge dissemination.
