Anna Strommenger

Dr. Anna Strommenger is a Postdoc/Research Associate at the Department of Contemporary History within the Faculty of History, Philosophy and Theology at Bielefeld University since July 2021. Her habilitation project examines foreign perspectives on National Socialist Germany, focusing on its rise, international constitution, and consequences from the 1920s to the 1960s.

• Education: Doctorate (Dr. phil.) from the University of Duisburg-Essen (2021, summa cum laude), Master’s in Medieval and Modern History, Political Science, and Philosophy from the University of Cologne (2015).

Research Interests: Contemporary History, Social Democracy, Transnational History, Memory Practices, and the interplay between Heimat (homeland) and political ideologies. Her work often intersects with gender studies and socio-political dynamics, as seen in her involvement with Bielefeld’s interdisciplinary research initiatives.

Recent Publications: Her 2023 monograph explores the concept of Heimat in Social Democracy, and her edited volumes address labor freedom, transnational historical perspectives, and socio-cultural constructs of Heimat. Articles span topics from W.E.B. Du Bois’ observations of Nazi Germany to Friedrich Engels’ housing debates.

Scientific Awards: Recipient of the Friedrich-Ebert-Preis (2022), GHI Postdoctoral Fellowship (2023–2024), DAAD Conference Travel Grant (2023), and others.
