Anna Nilsson is a Professor/Senior Physician and Head of Division at Karolinska Institutet's Department of Women's and Children's Health. She leads the research group 'Infections and Immunity in Children with Cancer,' focusing on understanding how cancer therapies impact immune responses, particularly in pediatric patients. Her roles include overseeing the Pediatric Oncology and Pediatric Surgery divisions, combining clinical expertise with research leadership.
Education: Dr. med. (2004), Docent (2009), Medical Degree (1991) from Karolinska Institutet. Research interests center on immune system recovery post-chemotherapy, B-lymphocyte function, plasma cell niche dynamics, and gut microbiota's role in immune recovery. She investigates vaccine efficacy in cancer survivors and infection risks in immunocompromised children.
Key projects include studying the impact of chemotherapy on T/NK cells and herpesviruses, as well as the clinical implementation of targeted therapies via the INFORM registry. Over 100 peer-reviewed articles and collaborations with global researchers highlight her contributions to pediatric oncology and immunology.
Lab/Team: A multidisciplinary group with PhD students (Cecilia Chrapkowska, Erik Larsson, Amanda Ramilo Amor, Eva Tiselius) and collaborators like Shanie Saghafian-Hedengren. Projects span from molecular mechanisms of immune recovery to clinical trials of novel therapies.
