Dr. Hannes Hagström is an Adjunct Professor and Senior Consultant in Hepatology at Karolinska University Hospital, where he leads research on steatotic liver disease epidemiology. He co-directs Karolinska Institutet's Center for Bioinformatics and Biostatistics.
His work focuses on risk factors for liver disease progression using large-scale epidemiology. He built one of the world's largest steatotic liver disease cohorts and leads projects like the Fatty Liver In Sweden cohort and SCANDIA diabetes screening initiative.
Dr. Hagström has received the Bengt Ihre Scholarship (2016), AASLD Early Career Investigator Award (2018), and UEG Rising Star Award (2024). His research has demonstrated doubled mortality rates in fatty liver patients and pioneered combined liver/retina screening in diabetes care.
