Anna Macdonald is an Associate Professor in Global Development at the School of Global Development, University of East Anglia. She is also a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa (LSE) and Senior Research Associate at the University of Johannesburg. Her work examines political violence, transitional justice, law and social order, displacement, and the politics of humanitarian interventions in East and Central Africa, focusing on authoritarianism's interplay with justice systems.

Her research spans Political Violence, Transitional Justice, and Humanitarian Governance, analyzing how public authorities function in marginalized regions. Recent publications address political mobilization, Covid-19 governance, and legal engagement in post-war zones. Anna co-edited Humanitarianism: A Dictionary of Concepts (Routledge, 2018).
Anna has received the Senior Visiting Fellow award from the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa (2018). Her work is funded by the British Academy/Leverhulme Trust, AHRC, ESRC, and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. She co-leads the ESRC-funded Centre for Public Authority and International Development (CPAID) and contributes to interdisciplinary research on conflict-affected regions.
