Dr. Anna Kontos is a Medical Scientist and Deputy Director of the Paediatric Sleep Disorders Research Group at the Adelaide Medical School, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Adelaide. Her research is conducted at the Robinson Research Institute and Women's and Children's Hospital in North Adelaide.
Dr. Kontos completed her BBsc, BSc Hons, and PhD at the University of Adelaide. Her educational background has prepared her for specialized research in pediatric sleep medicine and physiology.
Dr. Kontos' research focuses on the integrated physiology of sleep disordered breathing in child development. She investigates how sleep disorders affect multiple physiological systems including the autonomic nervous system, cardiovascular system, microbiome, and immune systems in developing children. Her work examines the role of upper airway muscle tone, dental morphology, and allergens in sleep disorders, and whether treatment reverses pathological consequences of habitual snoring. She leads multiple research projects examining vascular health, metabolism, endocrine function, and pregnancy-related sleep disorders.
As Deputy Director of the Paediatric Sleep Disorders Research Group alongside Professor Declan Kennedy, Dr. Kontos supervises multiple research projects for Third Year and Honours students. Her laboratory work is based at the Women's and Children's Hospital and Robinson Research Institute, where she utilizes histological evaluation, physiological measurements, and metabolite analysis to understand the underlying mechanisms of sleep disorders in children.
