Professor Michael Stark serves as Deputy Director of the Robinson Research Institute and Research Group Leader of the Neonatal Medicine Group at the University of Adelaide. He holds a professorship within the Women's and Children's Health department and maintains clinical affiliation with the Women's and Children's Hospital.
Professor Stark's research focuses on improving neonatal survival free of neurodevelopmental impairment. His work encompasses pre-clinical research, large-scale perinatal randomized controlled trials, and research implementation. Key interests include:
- Better understanding fundamental oxygen physiology in very preterm newborns with focus on early acquired neonatal brain injury
- Development of novel approaches to transfusion in high-risk preterm newborns
- Patient-specific approaches to nutrition in critically ill newborns designed to promote self-healing phenotypes
His research group leads the Clinical Trials and Translation Foundation Research Stream within the Robinson Research Institute, aiming to deliver world-class advances in human reproduction and maternal and child health. Professor Stark currently supervises multiple research projects including studies on brain oxygen reference ranges, amino acid administration timing for surgical newborns, and intranasal maternal breast milk for preterm babies with intraventricular hemorrhage.
