Professor Anna Gerbrandy is a distinguished academic at Utrecht University School of Law, holding the position of Professor of Competition Law at the Europa Institute. She serves as research director for the Department of Law and is deeply involved in multiple research initiatives including the Renforce Research Group, the Institutions for Open Societies research area, and as co-leader of the Governing the Digital Society focus area. Her institutional responsibilities span research, education, and leadership at both the School of Law and university levels.
Gerbrandy's research expertise centers on Competition Law with particular emphasis on the power dynamics of Big Tech companies, their influence on markets and democracy, and the appropriate competition law responses. She has developed significant research lines on the intersection between competition law and public interests, especially regarding sustainability. Her work connects legal theory with practical applications in digital governance, market regulation, and democratic resilience. She founded the platform 'Markets and Corporations in Open Societies' with colleagues Rutger Claassen and Judith van Erp, contributing to the Institutions' research focus on open societies.
Her scholarly output shows a clear trend toward addressing the challenges posed by digital platforms and Big Tech, with increasing attention to democratic implications, power dynamics beyond traditional market power concepts, and sustainability considerations within competition law frameworks. Recent publications demonstrate her leadership in conceptualizing 'Modern Bigness' as a framework for understanding contemporary corporate power.
