Rutger Claassen is Professor of Political Philosophy and Economic Ethics at Utrecht University's Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, where he also serves as Director of the Ethics Institute. His work bridges theoretical philosophy with practical societal challenges, focusing on the ethical dimensions of economic institutions, corporate power, and democratic governance. As co-Director of the interdisciplinary network 'Institutions for Open Societies,' he connects philosophical inquiry with real-world policy concerns.
Claassen earned his PhD from Utrecht University in 2008 with a dissertation titled 'The Market's Place in the Provision of Goods,' supervised by Marcus Düwell and Elizabeth Anderson. He holds cum laude degrees in both Philosophy and Law from Utrecht University, providing the interdisciplinary foundation for his current research agenda that examines the intersection of legal, political, and economic institutions.
His research centers on political philosophy, economic ethics, and social justice, with particular focus on corporate governance, democratic institutions, and the relationship between property rights and political power. Claassen develops theoretical frameworks that challenge conventional understandings of corporate purpose, arguing for models that prioritize broader societal value creation over narrow shareholder interests. His capability approach to justice emphasizes navigational agency and the expansion of human capabilities as central to social justice.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent trajectory exploring how economic institutions can be restructured to serve democratic values and social justice. Key themes include fiduciary theories of property, corporate purpose beyond shareholder value, sustainable ownership models, and mechanisms for stakeholder representation in corporate governance. His work increasingly addresses environmental dimensions of economic organization and the need for long-term institutional thinking that moves beyond short-term profit maximization.
Claassen has secured significant research funding, including an ERC grant for 'The Business Corporation as a Political Actor' (2020-2025) and an NWO grant for 'Private Property and Political Power in Liberal-Democratic Societies' (2017-2022), demonstrating scholarly recognition of his research agenda. His monograph 'Capabilities in a Just Society: A Theory of Navigational Agency' (Cambridge University Press, 2018) represents a major contribution to capability theory.
As Director of the Ethics Institute and co-Director of Institutions for Open Societies, Claassen leads interdisciplinary teams addressing pressing societal challenges. His Sustainable Finance Lab work connects academic research with practical financial sector challenges, while his founding of the Philosophical Café Utrecht demonstrates his commitment to public philosophy and engagement beyond academia. He regularly contributes to Dutch media and public debates on corporate responsibility, democracy, and social justice.
