Lisanne Hummel is a Researcher at Utrecht University's Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance, specializing in International and European Law. She is affiliated with the Research Priority Area 'Governing the Digital Society' and the interdisciplinary research program 'Institutions for Open Societies (IOS)'. Her work focuses on the intersection of competition law, digital markets, and innovation policy within the European legal framework.
Hummel completed her BSc in International Business Administration at Erasmus University Rotterdam, her LLB at KU Leuven in Belgium, and her LLM in Law & Economics at Utrecht University. After working in the financial sector as a legal counsel for several years, she began her PhD research at Utrecht University in August 2020. Her doctoral research focused on the role of innovation as a competitive pressure in digital markets and the response of European competition law to these challenges. This PhD research was conducted as part of the ERC Starting Grant project 'Modern Bigness' led by Professor Anna Gerbrandy.
Her research primarily explores how European competition law can address the unique challenges posed by digital platforms and Big Tech companies. She investigates the relationship between market power, innovation dynamics, and regulatory frameworks, with particular attention to the Digital Markets Act and the regulation of artificial intelligence. Her work examines whether traditional competition law concepts remain adequate for digital markets or whether new approaches are needed to ensure fair competition while preserving innovation incentives.
Hummel's publications demonstrate her expertise in analyzing the effectiveness of EU regulatory approaches to digital markets. Her work spans topics such as contestability in digital markets, the long-term implications of AI regulation, and the impact of the Digital Markets Act on end-user protection, showing a consistent focus on how innovation interacts with competition law in the digital economy.
