Anke Neumann Jenal is a Group Leader in the Clay Minerals and Environmental Geochemistry department at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) since 2024. Her research focuses on mineral redox reactions, particularly in iron-bearing clay minerals, and their applications in contaminant transformation. She employs Mössbauer spectroscopy to study electron transfer processes at the mineral-water interface. Previously, she held roles such as Senior Lecturer (2020-2023) and Lecturer (2013-2020) at Newcastle University, UK, and conducted postdoctoral research globally, including at ETH Zürich and the University of Iowa.
Education includes a Doctor of Sciences (2008) and Master in Chemistry (2004) from ETH Zürich, Switzerland, and a Bachelor's degree from the University of Rostock, Germany. Awards include the Humboldt Research Fellowship (2022-2023) and the EPSRC Bright Ideas Award (2015-2017).
Her work spans fundamental mechanisms of redox processes to practical applications in engineered systems. Recent studies highlight advanced oxidation processes for antibiotic resistance gene removal and pozzolanic reactivity of meta-kaolinites.
Key scientific contributions include evaluating antibacterial properties of clays, interpreting Fe redox curves in clay minerals, and studying U(VI) reduction in goethite. Her publications (over 30 articles) address environmental contaminants, mineral reactivity, and radionuclide behavior.
