Prof. Dr. Stefan B. Haderlein leads the Environmental Mineralogy & Chemistry group at the University of Tübingen's Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. He has served as Chair of this group since 2002, following leadership roles at ETH Zurich institutions and Eawag. His research focuses on mineral-water interactions, contaminant hydrology, and redox chemistry processes.
- Dr.sc.nat. in Environmental Sciences (ETH Zurich, 1992)
- Diploma in Sanitary Engineering & Water Pollution Control (ETH Zurich, 1988)
- Diploma in Geoecology (University of Bayreuth, 1987)
His research interests span environmental mineralogy, contaminant transport mechanisms, and redox reactions at mineral-water interfaces. Key work includes electron transfer processes between iron minerals and organic compounds, isotope fractionation in contaminant degradation, and pollutant sorption dynamics.
Recent publications address iron mineral reactivity, particularly magnetite and green rust systems. His work combines experimental geochemistry with environmental applications, covering topics like contaminant hydrology, redox transformations, and isotope geochemistry.
- Swiss National Science Foundation Fellowship (1996)
- ETH Zurich Medal for Outstanding Dissertation (1992)
- University of Bayreuth Diploma Award (1987)
Haderlein has advised numerous PhD students and served in leadership roles including Head of the Geoecology Program (since 2010) and Director of the Center for Applied Geosciences (2004-2006). He edited the Journal of Contaminant Hydrology (2004-2010) and co-led the international PhD program 'GeoEnviron' (2007-2017).
