Dr. Martin Glaus is a Research Scientist at the Laboratory for Waste Management, Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland. Since 1992, he has led research on radionuclide transport in geological media, focusing on diffusion processes in clay-rich environments and organic matter interactions. He currently heads the Diffusion Processes Group and manages projects under the EU's FUTuRE initiative.
Education: PhD in Inorganic Chemistry (1989, ETH Zurich) with a thesis on iron mobilization from transferrin. M.Sc. in Biochemistry (1984, ETH Zurich). Professional experience includes postdoctoral research at EAWAG (1989–1992) and teaching/research at ETH Zurich (1984–1989).
Research interests span experimental studies of radionuclide speciation, solute diffusion in compacted clays, organic polymer degradation, and analytical techniques like ion chromatography. His work emphasizes understanding radionuclide retention mechanisms in geological repositories.
Expert activities include co-supervision of 4 PhD theses (ETH Zurich, University of Bern) and peer review for journals like Applied Geochemistry and Radiochimica Acta. He serves on expert panels for waste management projects in Finland and Switzerland.
Laboratory leadership includes managing the Diffusion Processes Group and contributing to large-scale initiatives like the Swiss Deep Drilling Campaign. His research bridges fundamental clay science with applied radioactive waste management solutions.
