Professor Anja Shortland is a Professor of Political Economy at King's College London, affiliated with the Department of Political Economy in the School of Politics & Economics. She holds a PhD in International Relations from the LSE, following an Engineering and Economics undergraduate degree at Oxford. Her research focuses on private governance in high-risk markets such as hostages, fine art, antiquities, and ransomware. Notable publications include Kidnap: Inside the Ransom Business (2019) and Lost Art: The Art Loss Register’s Casebook (2021). She co-authored the 2013 World Bank report on Somali piracy and has contributed to studies on ransomware, insurance dynamics, and art market governance. Awards include the 2016 Lewis Fry Richardson Award. Teaching includes courses on the Political Economy of Organized Crime and the Economics of Crime. She advises on PhDs in crime economics, cybercrime, and informal governance.
Her research highlights how legal entities interact with criminal enterprises in weak governance environments, with a focus on insurance’s role in shaping crime and vice versa. Recent work explores antiquities markets, cyber threats, and the evolution of ransomware. She leads the Global South and History and Political Economy Research Groups at King’s.
