Dr. Anita Marshall is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Florida. She holds a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of South Florida (2018). Her research focuses on geoscience education, particularly creating accessible and inclusive learning environments for students with disabilities and underserved groups. She integrates disability justice principles, Indigenous relationality concepts, and geo-ethics into her work. Her geologic expertise includes volcanology and near-surface geophysics, with fieldwork in volcanic regions like Arizona and Ireland.
Marshall leads initiatives like the GeoSPACE project, which develops hybrid accessible field courses combining in-person and remote participation. These programs use technologies like mission control frameworks and real-time video streaming to bridge access gaps. She also co-founded the GEOPATH program, taking students to sites like the Grand Canyon and Sunset Crater. Her work emphasizes experiential learning, technology-enhanced field methods, and transforming geoscience culture to be more inclusive.
Marshall teaches undergraduate and graduate geology courses and supervises graduate research in geoscience education. She is a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, incorporating cultural perspectives into her pedagogy. Her contributions have advanced accessibility in planetary science education and fieldwork equity, with ongoing projects exploring terrestrial analogs for Martian environments and improving communication strategies in field settings.
