Professor Angus Turner is a Professor at the University of Western Australia (UWA) and affiliated with the Lions Eye Institute. He leads Lions Outback Vision, providing specialist outreach services to remote and Indigenous communities across Western Australia. His roles include Head of the Remote & Indigenous Eye Health Unit at the Lions Eye Institute and Board Member of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia. He holds a medical degree from UWA, a Master of Evidence-Based Medicine from Oxford University, and completed ophthalmology training in Melbourne.
His research focuses on advancing AI applications for improving diagnosis and service delivery in eye care, particularly for underserved populations. Key areas include diabetic retinopathy screening, telemedicine, and addressing health disparities in Indigenous communities. Turner has delivered the prestigious Fred Hollows Lecture (2018) and secured grants including an NHMRC Partnership Grant for integrating AI in eye disease screening.
