Dao-Yi Yu

Professor Dao-Yi Yu is a faculty member at the University of Western Australia (UWA) within the UWA Medical School’s Centre for Ophthalmology and Visual Science. He leads the Physiology and Pharmacology group at the Lions Eye Institute. With over 25 years of NHMRC funding, his research focuses on glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vasculature. He co-developed the XEN® Gel Stent Surgery System, revolutionizing glaucoma treatment globally.

Research Interests: His work spans glaucoma mechanisms, retinal vascular dynamics, and advanced imaging techniques like optical coherence tomography. He actively collaborates with universities and pharmaceutical companies to translate research into clinical applications.

Grants & Projects: Leads 26 grants including 'Further advances in glaucoma therapy' (NHMRC, 2020–2025) and 'Developing a novel glaucoma surgery' (NHMRC, 2017–2019). Recent projects include retinal imaging studies and cytokine analyses in retinal vein occlusion.

Awards: Recognized with the Byron Kakulas Medal (2023) for clinical research and an Order of Australia (2019) for contributions to eye research. His work aligns with UN SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).

Labs/Teams: Heads the Lions Eye Institute’s Physiology and Pharmacology group, fostering interdisciplinary research in ophthalmology and medical device innovation.
