Andrew Mehnert

Andrew Mehnert serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the UWA Medical School's Centre for Ophthalmology and Visual Science (affiliated with the Lions Eye Institute) and holds a Senior Lecturer/Group Leader position in Data Management, Analysis and Visualisation at the University of Western Australia.

His educational foundation includes a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Queensland (2004), with doctoral research focused on chromatin distribution analysis for cervical cancer screening. Prior academic appointments span Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden) as Assistant/Associate Professor (2011-2014) and University of Queensland as Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow (2005-2011).

Dr. Mehnert's research centers on biomedical image analysis for MRI, CT, and optical microscopy applications. His technical expertise encompasses image segmentation, spatial co-registration, denoising, parametric modeling of contrast enhancement, and computational diffusion MRI. Current work emphasizes retinal vascular analysis and ophthalmic diagnostics, particularly in diabetic retinopathy and macular edema through optical coherence tomography angiography.

Recent publications reveal a strong trajectory in deep learning applications for retinal imaging, intracranial pressure measurement techniques, and quantitative perfusion analysis. His work bridges computer vision with clinical ophthalmology, addressing critical diagnostic challenges through multimodal imaging fusion and advanced computational modeling.

His current leadership focuses on developing scalable data analysis frameworks for microscopy researchers across disciplines.

As Group Leader for Data Management, Analysis and Visualisation, he directs cross-disciplinary collaborations applying imaging expertise to microscopy techniques, with strong institutional ties to the Lions Eye Institute and Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
