Her institutional affiliations include significant roles at the IDS since at least 2012, where she leads multiple major research projects and serves on various national and international advisory boards.
Her research interests focus on the grammar of contemporary German from multiple perspectives, including contrastive grammar, grammatical variation, language change, corpus linguistics, and the syntax-semantics interface. She has developed expertise in grammatical terminology and orthography, with a particular interest in reconstructing grammatical research findings for public application. Her work often bridges theoretical linguistics with practical language applications.
Analysis of her recent publications (2016-2020) reveals a consistent focus on empirical approaches to German grammar, with particular attention to grammatical variation, corpus-based analysis, and the theoretical implications of syntactic phenomena. Her work spans theoretical linguistics, applied grammar, and language teaching methodologies, demonstrating how corpus linguistics can inform both theoretical frameworks and practical language applications.
Prof. Wöllstein serves in numerous leadership roles including Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Leibniz Centre for General Linguistics, membership on the DFG Review Board for Humanities and Social Sciences, and editorial responsibilities for major linguistic publications including the DUDEN 4 - The Grammar. She leads the Grammar of German in European Comparison (GDE-V) project and the Orthographic Resources Project at IDS.
Her academic career spans multiple German universities including Stuttgart, Cologne, Wuppertal, Saarland, Tübingen, Mainz, and currently Mannheim where she teaches grammar courses.
