Beata Trawinski

Beata Trawinski is a researcher in the Grammar department at the Leibniz Institute for the German Language (IDS) in Mannheim, Germany, where she has worked since April 2013. She serves as Head of the project 'Grammar of German in European Comparison – Verb Grammar' (together with Angelika Wöllstein) and Head of the project 'Grammar of German in European Comparison – Aspectuality.' Her institutional roles include Deputy Chair of the Committee of Academic Staff (since November 2023), former Chair of the Committee (2021-2023), and former Member of the Management Board of IDS (2021-2023).

Dr. Trawinski earned her doctorate in General Linguistics / Computational Linguistics from the University of Tübingen in 2012, following Slavic Philology studies at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, Poland (1995). Prior to joining IDS, she served as a Research Associate at the University of Tübingen (1999-2009) and University Assistant at the University of Vienna (2009-2014).

Her research focuses on German and Slavic languages (particularly Polish), with specializations in propositional arguments, sentence valence, control phenomena, plurality, negation and negative polarity, and multi-word expressions. She employs language typology and comparison approaches, morphosyntax and semantics-pragmatics interfaces, corpus linguistics, quantitative linguistics, and grammar engineering methodologies, with particular expertise in Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar and model-theoretic semantics.

Analysis of her recent publications reveals a consistent focus on cross-linguistic grammatical comparison, particularly between German and Slavic languages. Her work demonstrates methodological sophistication through corpus-based approaches, with increasing emphasis on the European Reference Corpus (EuReCo) as a research infrastructure. Key thematic areas include negation raising phenomena, propositional arguments across languages, light-verb constructions, and grammaticometric approaches to modeling functional variation.

Dr. Trawinski actively contributes to academic governance as Deputy Chair of the Committee of Academic Staff and previously served on the Management Board of IDS. She has supervised 10 BA theses and 2 MA theses at the University of Mannheim and taught at multiple institutions including Vienna, Tübingen, Passau, Göttingen and Mannheim. Her editorial work includes serving on the editorial boards of IDSopen, Linguistics Beyond and Within (LingBaW), and Eurasian Humanitarian Journal (until 2022), and she has organized numerous international conferences including the 10th International Contrastive Linguistics Conference in 2023.
