Angela Vanhaelen is Professor of Art History at McGill University, specializing in early modern visual culture of the Dutch Republic and colonial networks. Her research examines art's role in globalization, colonization, and social power dynamics.
Major research themes:
- Artistic technologies in colonial contexts
- Religious conflict and iconoclasm
- Gender, race and class representation
- Urban automata and public spectacles
Publications include award-winning studies on Dutch religious art and iconoclasm. Recent books investigate colonial visuality in Dutch Brazil and moving statues in Amsterdam. She has supervised numerous doctoral students to completion.
