Claudia Swan is the Inaugural Mark Steinberg Weil Professor of Art History at Washington University. Her research examines northern European art and visual culture through interdisciplinary approaches combining art history, history of science, and material culture studies.
Research explores:
- Images in early modern scientific practice
- Theories of imagination in visual/textual traditions
- Art, trade, and diplomacy in the Dutch Republic
Recent publications address seventeenth-century taste, Dutch art in global trade networks, and relationships between visual culture and colonial expansion. Her book Rarities of These Lands analyzes art, trade, and diplomacy in the Dutch Republic.
