Marisa Bass is a Professor of History of Art and Chair of Yale’s Program in Early Modern Studies. She specializes in early modern northern European art, focusing on intersections between creative culture, natural history, and political expression. Her research explores topics like monuments, iconoclasm, and the representation of nature in works by Bruegel, Erasmus, and Gossart.
Education: B.A. Yale University (2003), M.A. and Ph.D. Harvard University (2011). Awards include the 2020 Bainton Prize and Guggenheim Fellowship. She teaches courses on Dutch art, Renaissance bodies, and the history of the book, and advises over 13 dissertation committees across disciplines.
Her current projects include a monograph on Erasmus and visual arts, a book on birds in art history, and articles on Dutch women artists’ 'accoutrementality' and Constantijn Huygens’ urban planning/shell collecting interests. She co-curated the 'Beyond Bosch' exhibition and advises the student-led 'Thinking Small' project.
