Angela Shoup is the Ludwig A. Michael, MD Executive Directorship Professor and Executive Director of the Callier Center for Communication Disorders at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). She holds a Ph.D. in Human Development and Communication Sciences (UTD, 1994), an M.S. in Communication Disorders (UTD, 1992), and a B.S. in Speech Pathology and Audiology (UTD, 1989). Her research focuses on newborn hearing screening programs, congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) and its impact on hearing, and ototoxicity in pediatric populations. She also studies auditory electrophysiology and cochlear implants.
Her work emphasizes translating research into clinical practice, particularly in early intervention for hearing loss and CMV management. She has contributed to national guidelines for CMV screening and audiology practice. Shoup leads the Callier Center, fostering interdisciplinary approaches to communication disorders. Her recent studies explore ototoxicity risks in cystic fibrosis patients and pharmacological treatments for autoimmune inner ear disease.
Shoup’s research consistently addresses gaps in pediatric hearing health, advocating for evidence-based policies to improve outcomes for infants and children. She collaborates with clinicians and researchers across disciplines to advance diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies.
