Laura Dreisbach Hawe is an Associate Professor in the School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at San Diego State University (SDSU), affiliated with the College of Health and Human Services. She serves as Director of the Auditory Physiology and Psychoacoustics Laboratory and Au.D. Graduate Advisor. Her research focuses on otoacoustic emissions, cochlear physiology, and ototoxicity monitoring, with emphasis on chemotherapy-induced hearing loss and pediatric audiology. Dr. Hawe holds California, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Army audiology licenses, and has been honored with multiple awards including the 2007 Outstanding Faculty Award from Associated Students University Affairs Board.
Education: Ph.D. in Audiology and Hearing Sciences (Northwestern University, 1999), M.S. and B.S. in Audiology/Communication Disorders (Pennsylvania State University, 1991/1989). Professional experience spans over 30 years, including roles as Postdoctoral Researcher at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Audiologist in clinical settings. She has secured over $600,000 in grants for projects like 'Early Detection of Hearing Loss from Chemotherapy' (NIH, 2007) and 'Ototoxicity Monitoring in Cystic Fibrosis Patients.'
Research interests include high-frequency DPOAE repeatability, platinum chemotherapy ototoxicity, and auditory assessment techniques. She collaborates with pharmaceutical companies like Otonomy Inc. and Spiral Therapeutics, advising on drug development for hearing preservation. Over 40 peer-reviewed publications span journals like Ear and Hearing and Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. She serves on editorial boards for American Journal of Audiology and Journal of Molecular Medicine, and chairs committees for the American Auditory Society and ANSI standards development.
Grants and awards highlight her work in audiological monitoring and hearing conservation, including the 2018 Blasker-Rose-Miah Fund grant for 'Health-Related Quality of Life and Hearing Damage Disparities.'
