Professor Angela Shore serves as Professor of Cardiovascular Research at the University of Exeter Medical School, Director of the NIHR Exeter Clinical Research Facility for Experimental Medicine, Lead for the NIHR Bioresource Centre Exeter (Common Diseases), and Institutional Lead for the Wellcome funded GW4-CAT-HP clinical academic training programme. Previously, she held Vice-Dean Research roles at both the University of Exeter Medical School (until 2019) and Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry (2009-2019).
Her educational background includes a BSc in Physiology from the University of Newcastle and a PhD investigating vascular mechanisms underlying fluid homeostasis in patients with Liver Disease, followed by postdoctoral work at Newcastle and London universities expanding into hypertension research.
Shore's research centers on identifying early micro-vascular complications of diabetes and cardiovascular risk stratification, with primary focus areas in cardiovascular medicine, clinical sciences, medical physiology, and nutrition/dietetics. She champions interdisciplinary collaboration across physics, clinical practice, and basic science to address vascular biology challenges.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- The Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education (1996) for diabetes and vascular health research
- The Malpighi Gold medal from the European Society for Microcirculation (2015)
She supervises PhD students through cross-disciplinary partnerships and has secured major funding from the British Heart Foundation, Diabetes UK, European Union IMI JU, and NIHR. Shore drove research strategy, staff appointments, and facility development for Exeter's medical school, leading four successful RAE/REF submissions.
As global microcirculation research leader, she served 10 years as Treasurer of the European Society for Microcirculation and presidency of the British Microcirculation and Vascular Biology Society, currently chairing the Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation's Research Advisory Board.
